About Our Business
Pobam Music Inc.
Pobam (Preservation of Black American Music) is a music company that was founded after a result
of the many struggle that were met by many of the Memphis area musician who were talented
enough to be hailed as legends, icon, genius and pioneers of there time but were never
recognized pass that great community of Beale Street USA. The infant stages of Pobam were
conceived many years ago by Fred Ford and a few of his followers who had a dream to carry on the
legacy of the tradition of music that was so rich in Memphis. With a back ground that has span over
five decades in the Memphis sound, Mr. Fred Ford is the driving forces behind what is now become
a reality for this organization. He had enough for-cite to keep and record enough of this great
history, so that generation to come will enjoy.
He was one of the original organizers of the first Beale Street music festival in 1977 which he also
performed at many there after. Mr. Ford also was a music producer who in 1975 produced an
album for Mr. Phineas (Finas) Newborn whom was coined one of the greatest pianist ever,
comparing him to the great Art Tatum. This album was nominated for a Grammy and during those
years he went on to produce an album for Cybil Sheppard titled (Vanilla) with his Beale Street USA
Orchestra which featured Phineas Newborn on piano. He also recorded with many of the greats
while a member of the Johnny Otis band, artists like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Big Mama
Thornton, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, BB King, Rufus Thomas, and later in his career artists like
Alex Chilton, Charlie Rich, Charlie Wood and Calvin Owens just to name a few.
He also released a few albums of his own such as Bear Water The Beale Street Scene and
Madame Honey buns which will be reissued on POBAM very shortly.
Mr. Ford also had a live radio show three nights a week which showcased many greats in the area
who came in and jammed with His trio (The Fred Ford and Honeymoon Garner Trio). Over the
span of these years and many before them Mr. Ford recorded many sessions with that great talent
that was in Memphis and now we will be bringing to the world, for the first time, just how great this
Music that has so greatly captivated generation before us and now to you for the first time.
Many thanks to YHWH.
